As if by magic or maybe something more sinister  – I just have to recall a ghost of ‘Great Goals Past’ (see my post on Facebook page ‘I Remember When Frank Upton Score From The Halfway Line’ on 7th Dec) and suddenly out of ‘the blue’ haze of my memory steps one of our many past ‘wizard of the wings’ who will now be making a strangely coincidental return to the Bridge. Jasper Gronkaaer, the pallid, sunken eyed and enigmatic Dane will be putting in a show as a member of the Copenhagen FC team who will be coming to London for our 1/8th finals match-up, probably in early February.

Now let me see who else can I summon up?!*  Well tis’ the pantomime season. Mmmm what about Gianfranco Zola our own ‘Buttons’ who brought Cinderalla to the ball and then wouldn’t give it up, now there’s a great memory all in one tiny package of a name or consider our own jolly Norweigan GIANT – Tore Andre Flo, who also produced some massive performances down the flanks. Or maybe the mercurial “Puss In Football Boots”, Peter Bonetti whose memory lives long in those of true blue sheddites despite his infamous display against Germany in 1970 when ‘the cat’ as he is still affectionately known certainly had his worst performance in the most important game of his career. For those blue hearts who remember his arching, backward dive to scoop the ball from under the bar against the Hammers there is no doubt that had it been caught on film it would be compared today to Banksys wonder save from Pele’s header  in the same World Cup in ‘Meccico’. Bonettis’ version of the ‘Fosbury flop’ is somehow greater because of the missing footage and is the best save I ever witnessed.

Talking of flanks which we were earlier, with all this talk of wing’rs would anyone like a leg!
